Pianpolvere Soprano

Barolo Riserva

The vineyard that produces this Barolo was used centuries ago by Napolean. He housed gunpowder there, and that is where the name Pianpolvere is derived from. Soprano refers to it being on the higher part of the hillside, which is known for producing the best, most elegant wines. Bruno Giacosa, considered one of the godfathers of great Barolo winemakers, said that it was the single greatest vineyard in the entire production zone. This is one of the greatest wines Italy has ever produced. Cheers.

  • The 2010 Barolo Riserva Bussia from Pianpolvere Soprano if a flat-out stunner. It is also the first Barolo I have tasted under Roche dei Manzoni's stewardship of this historic Monforte estate that takes me back to the wines of Ferruccio Fenocchio prior to his passing. Rose petal, mint, kirsch, spice and blood orange are some of the many notes that shape this exquisite, classically translucent Barolo. Medium in body and supremely refined, the 2010 is utterly beguiling. I can't wait to taste it with bottle age.

  • Balsamic aromas and flavors of eucalyptus, juniper and pine lead off, backed by notes of macerated plum, cherry and licorice. Beefy, bolstered by thick, dusty tannins. This is closed up today but finishes long. Best from 2023 through 2046. 830 cases made.
